*This checklist will create 4 x ≈36lb plates, 2 x ≈13lb plates, 4 x ≈3.5lb plates.

** When purchasing the PVC pipe, bring a piece of the barbell and ensure that the size of the PVC slides smoothly onto the barbell without significant wiggle room

Step 1 – Preparing materials

You will need 3 pieces of rebar to form a triangle in each plate.

Cut 12 x 12” pieces for the 36lb plates.

Cut 6 x 6” pieces for the 13lb plates

Cut 12 x 3.5” pieces for the 3.5lb plates

Mix the concrete with the appropriate amount of water in a large bucket or on a tarp. The water to concrete ratio will be specified on the bag of concrete and may vary from mix to mix.

Measure the depth of the plant saucer and cut a piece of PVC of these lengths for each plate. For our set, this is 10 small PVC pieces. Ensure these are cut at a right angle.

Step 2 – Setting the concrete

With the plant saucers laid out on a flat surface (1), place the corresponding PVC pieces in the center point of each saucer (2). Generally, the saucers will have a small plastic dot at the center point.

While holding the PVC in the center, put a layer of concrete down (3). The first layer should be slightly less than half of the depth of the saucer. Pack the concrete in well and ensure that there aren’t dry patches.

Next place the rebar in a triangle around the center point as shown in the diagram below (4).

Add another layer of concrete on top of the rebar until it is level with the top of the saucer and the rebar is covered with concrete (5). Allow concrete to set for the specified setting time (≈24-48 hours).
